Why Am I Giving Up With Zettelkasten

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a blost about using Zettelkasten as my new note taking solution. Today I made the decision to give up trying it. Even though I have had a lot of fun looking into this method and trying to get myself setup as such, I have found it to be such a chore to take notes, especially very quickly. I am going to be working over the next couple of weeks to build my own note taking method.

I have got a lot of notes all in separate markdown files — I’ve written about how I make notes, and that is exactly how it is going to continue, just the way I organise them. My current way of working is a bit all over the show, I want to have a directory structure somewhat like the below.

- My Vault
  - _Drafts
  - Blosts
  - Book Reviews
  - Wikis
  - Randoms
  - Novels
  - Templates

I feel that this will work the best for me, now I just need to sort all my notes out and put them into the structure I am planning. This could take a while but I think that it’ll be worth it in the long run.

Structure Explained

So, why this structure? And what goes in each folder? Well, let’s start with the obvious one, Templates is where all my template files are stored, from Book Review template to Blost templates and any other templates that I might create at some point.

_Drafts will contain all notes that I’m working on actively. Anything finished will be filed away under one of the other folders and so I will easily be able to find what I haven’t finished.

Blosts is where I will keep all my blosts once I’ve finished writing them. This way I can separate my blosts from everything else and keep easy to look back over.

Book Reviews is where I will put all of my book reviews, of which I am hoping to write a lot more of.mm

Wikis is a place for me to keep all my long form notes about how things work, such as my Linux Wiki which I am compiling a wiki of anything I think I might need to remember in the future. I also keep little wikis about each of the WMs that I use.

Randoms is the place for everything else.

Novels is where I will keep all of my novel and fictional writing.

And that’s about it, I hope to be able to write in the future about how well this new system is working, but only time will tell.
