This blost is inspired by and replying to Joel’s blost linked above.
I read Joel’s blost about changing blogging platforms and tools, and as someone who has changed tools many times (I think I’ve used just about every static site generator out there) I felt like writing about why I changed platform so many times and why I like where I am now.
Previous Sites
I have had many sites over the years, starting with a bad little HTML static site that I hand coded pre-2023. In August 2023 I rebranded myself to OrbitalMartian and started taking my blogging seriously (kind of), I also got my first Eleventy site made — I used Glitch to make and host it so it was an odd one but after that, I made one myself from the Eleventy Base Blog Starter repo, which was my blogging home for a long time. I have recreated said Eleventy site twice since then but have also used Hugo, Bashblog, Blag; I tried Lume as well, but this one didn’t take off.
Why Changing So Often
This is the age old question, I have in the past been a distro hopper, a WM hopper, a fedi instance hopper and a website hopper. The biggest reason is that I want to try things out, and with being a kinaesthetic learner, I learn best by doing, hence why I change my main thing so I can play with it.
I often saw people doing cool things with their sites, and wanted to try that, which led me to new SSGs. I often found myself stressing over what I am working on with it being different every time I worked on things. As of today, I am using Jekyll and am loving every minute. I now look forward to working with it.
I hope you enjoyed this blost, have a good one. BYEEE!!!
