Why I Blog

Blogging is something that people have been doing for decades, late 1990’s (damn, that’s older than I thought and older than I am). I first started blogging properly in 2023 when I relaunched my online profiles (from LinuxGamer to OrbitalMartian). My first blog was running Eleventy and the base theme. Eventually I experimented and used Readable CSS, and also tried a whole host of other static site generators to make my site.
Today, I have my new website built using Jekyll and using my own CSS framework (OrbitalCSS). I write a whole variety of content, mostly about stuff I find interesting or fun. This could be Linux related, art related, gaming, animals, or even just me rambling on about a topic I want to write about. There is no schedule, just when I feel like it.
My biggest reason for why I blog is because I like doing it. It’s a relaxing process, I enjoy what I write, if I don’t enjoy what I’m writing about, I simply don’t write it. My blog is as much for myself as its is for my readers. It’s a place for me to escape the real world and just write what I want, having people read my blog is just a welcome bonus.
Next up, the people I’ve met and interacted with through having a blog have been amazing. The people (and non people) have been lovely.
Having a blog has also been a learning experience, over the last few years, I have had to learn a whole host of new skills: from writing code for my website, setting websites up, troubleshooting issues and creating my own little things — it’s definitely taught me a few things.
It’s also introduced me to RSS which is an amazing old technology, that everyone should be using, it’s so much nicer. All of my blosts are posted to my RSS feed. I always allow my RSS readers a bit of time to read each new post before I toot about it on Fediverse. A great thing that is slowly dying out.
I blog for myself, others and for learning. That’s it for this one, have a good one, BYEEE!!!
