Why I Want To Switch To Android?

For the last 6 or so years, the whole time I’ve had a smartphone, I have had iPhones. Starting with an iPhone 5, then upgrading to an iPhone 7 and now where I currently am, an iPhone 14. Over this time, I have grown to hate certain features and dislike others. There is a very small proportion of features that I like (namely text messaging and phone calls), things could definitely be better.

I have of recent been yearning for my current phone contract to run out so I can get a nice new Android phone, to finally escape the Apple enshittified “ecosystem”.

Customisation

This, I have got to say, is one of the biggest reasons I want to change over to Android. iOS doesn’t have any (well much) in the way of customisations. They have recently made a bit of progress with iOS 18, but it’s too little, too late. Android has had these customisation options and more for a heck of a lot longer. Another thing that I have seen and really am eager for is custom third party launchers and custom icon packs. This is something small but mighty in terms of being your system.

Open Source

Android is open source, iOS is proprietary and closed source, that’s all there is to this point, it’s quite self explanatory. Open source is 100% the way to go.

App Selection/3rd Party Stores

On iOS, you have to get apps from the Apple App Store. A store curated by Apple, where developers have to pay a hefty fee to have their app shipped in said store, hence, Apple’s OS has limited apps available, there is no a wide range of choices. Android has the Google Play Store, and other third party stores (such as F-Droid) which boast a wider array of options. Another thing is that browsers on Android can use their own web engine, as opposed to iOS who can only use Webkit/Apple’s Safari as a base, meaning all the browsers are very samey.

Conclusion

I have been wanting to write this blost for a while, and have been wanting to use Android for even longer. The time has come now to actually get this moving. I have already made up my mind that I am moving to Android, never to look back at iOS, I don’t care if, at first, I struggle, it’s natural to struggle with something that’s new to you. I want to bite the bullet soon. I shall keep you good folks updated.

Have a good one!
